The short answer
Moong dal khichdi is safe and recommended for babies starting from 6 months of age (180 days) when starting solids.
How to serve at each age
- 6 Months: Well-cooked moong dal and rice, fork-mashed into a silky semi-solid with a spoon of ghee
- 7 to 8 Months: Soft mashed khichdi with finely cooked pumpkin, carrot, or bottle gourd
- 9 to 11 Months: Lumpy soft khichdi with small tender vegetable bits baby can chew with gums
- 12+ Months: Wholesome family khichdi with mild cumin, turmeric, and mixed vegetables
Safety & choking prevention
- Pressure cook until very soft (4–5 whistles). Never blend with a mixer at 8+ months; fork mashing teaches oral motor chewing skills.
Allergy notes
Hypoallergenic and gluten-free combination. The premier Indian complementary staple.
Nutritional benefits
