The short answer

Dal water is safe and recommended for babies starting from 6 months of age (180 days) when starting solids.

How to serve at each age

  • 6 Months: Clear strained yellow moong dal water with no salt or whole spices
  • 7 to 8 Months: Progress from clear water to thick, spoon-mashed dal with soft cooked grains
  • 9 to 11 Months: Full thick dal with soft vegetable mash and rice grains
  • 12+ Months: Standard family dal with mild spices and ghee

Safety & choking prevention

  • CRITICAL PEDIATRIC NOTE: Strained dal water contains minimal calories, iron, and protein compared to whole mashed lentils. Transition quickly from clear dal water to thick mashed dal within 1–2 weeks so baby receives actual nutrition.

Allergy notes

Non-allergenic legume. Safe and traditional Indian complementary starter.

Nutritional benefits

  • Gentle hydration with dissolved B-complex vitamins and minerals
  • Introduces baby to the comforting taste of Indian lentils
  • Easy to swallow for early weaning tongue movements
