The short answer
Besan is suitable for babies starting from 7 months of age once initial first tastes are established.
How to serve at each age
- 6 Months: Not recommended as first food due to density and gas potential.
- 7 to 8 Months: Very thin, soft steamed besan cheela soaked in mild curd or dal
- 9 to 11 Months: Soft besan cheela cut into finger strips with grated zucchini or paneer
- 12+ Months: Standard family besan cheela, dhokla, and vegetable pakoras (baked/steamed)
Safety & choking prevention
- Always cook besan thoroughly. Raw or half-cooked chickpea flour causes severe infant gas, bloating, and tummy cramps.
Allergy notes
Legume. Introduce in morning hours and monitor for gas or rash.
Nutritional benefits
- High vegetable protein density
- Rich in iron, potassium, and dietary fiber
- Strengthens masticatory chewing muscles as a finger food
